Population size! How one community calculated theirs (an example)
When preparing a LPP for their community council area, one community faced a challenge. Different data sources showed very different population figures. Census data suggested a population of around 420, while figures based on the publicly available electoral register suggested closer to 250. This made it difficult to confidently calculate engagement levels and participation rates.
Further investigation identified an approach that was more useful when working to community council boundaries. 51³Ô¹ÏÃâ·ÑApp and Bute Council’s Scheme for the Establishment of Community Councils (2022) includes electorate figures for each community council area, based on the full electoral register. These figures reflect community council boundaries and are used for official purposes, such as determining community council membership.
Having a reliable population figure was important because it enabled the community to clearly show the percentage of the population that engaged in their Local Place Plan engagement activity, strengthening the evidence used to support the plan.
